A real address does not prove a real offer

Scammers can copy photographs, descriptions and addresses from legitimate advertisements. Confirm that the contact person is connected to the owner or authorized manager and that the unit is actually being offered under the stated terms.

Search for conflicting versions of the listing, compare contact details and ask to view the property through a reasonable process. An explanation for why nobody can show the rental should be treated as a reason to investigate further, not as proof of exclusivity.

Verify authority before urgency

High-pressure language is designed to shorten your decision process. A claim that many people are interested may be true, but it does not remove the need to verify the recipient of an application, deposit or identity document.

Use independently obtained contact information when possible. For managed properties, confirm the company and application domain. For an individual owner, use appropriate public records or other reliable evidence and make sure the payment recipient matches the verified arrangement.

Protect documents as carefully as money
